Starting with TFS 2015 Update 2, Release Management features are integrated into Team Foundation Server (TFS) and into the RELEASE hub in TFS web access. If you are considering starting with Release Management, you should use the new web-based version. If you are already using the server and client version described in this topic, you should be aware that no new features will be added to this version. By using Release Management for Visual Studio 2013, your development and operations teams can confidently configure and automate complex deployments to a variety of target environments. You can also model release processes, track approvals and sign-offs, and display release status graphically.
Release Management for Visual Studio 2013 requires Visual Studio Ultimate 2013 with Update 4, Visual Studio Premium 2013 with Update 4, or Test Professional 2013.
Note: To enable the on-premises release management capabilities, you must also install the Release Management Server for Team Foundation Server 2013. Optionally, on every target machine to which you want to publish deployments, you can install Microsoft Deployment Agent 2013.
To model release processes and enable graphical views of release status, you must have the Release Management Client for Visual Studio 2013. You can also use this to also connect to Release Management Visual Studio Team Services service.
The Remote Tools are intended for computers that don't have Visual Studio so that you can debug, test, and profile apps that are executing on them. Visual Studio must be installed on the development computer that's connected to, or uses the data collected from the remote computer. Connecting to the remote debugger included in the Remote Tools is supported in Visual Studio Ultimate 2013, Visual Studio Premium 2013, Visual Studio Professional 2013, Visual Studio Express 2013 for Windows, and Visual Studio Express 2013 for Windows Desktop.
Connection to the test features in the Remote Tools requires Visual Studio Ultimate 2013 or Visual Studio Test Professional 2013.
The Remote Tools also enable the installation of a developer license, deployment, debugging, and profiling of Windows Store apps on Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.
